Nuclear Power
In the effort to reduce our dependency on fossil fuels and mitigate the damage being caused by climate change, some advocates are pushing a return to nuclear power.
From an environmental health perspective, nuclear energy is a non-starter. From the mining of uranium through the daily release of radioactive materials during operations to the eventual disposal of highly radioactive nuclear waste, the process is fraught with potential harm.
Not only is nuclear power the most expensive form of energy ever developed (the last two nuclear power plants built in the United States cost a combined $36 billion) but with the rapid development of safe, renewable options, a return to nuclear power is an unwarranted risk for citizens and a grossly unfair burden on future generations.
In New York State, an effort is underway to enact a moratorium on any taxpayer funding for nuclear power. To support this effort managed by Grassroots Communications, please see the attached talking points and sample Letters to the Editor.
