Issues: Pesticides

Current Issues

Pesticides are ubiquitous in modern American life. Tens of thousands of consumer products contain registered pesticides, including insect spray and powders, pest strips, lice shampoos, anti-bacterial soap, household disinfectants, and some deodorizers. Americans spread more than 70 million pounds of pesticides on their lawns every year.

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that no pesticide is safe, even when used as directed. The health effects of these chemicals and their synergistic effects are of great concern to researchers who have demonstrated that when certain pesticides are combined, their toxicity can increase by as much as 1,000 times. With almost one thousand active pesticide ingredients registered for use, testing for these synergistic effects is virtually impossible.

Our page on lawn pesticides provides information about the dangers associated with these chemicals, along with links to more information.

Our Grassroots Healthy Lawn Program is an award-winning program designed to increase the demand for natural lawn care services among consumers and to train professional landscapers in the science of natural turf management.

Our ChildSafe School program contains a special section on turf pesticides used on school playing fields. Here you'll find a short video, sample policies, Q&A Sheets and abstracts from recent scientific studies.
