The Grassroots Healthy Lawn Program (GHLP) is an award-winning pesticide reduction program designed to alter the balance of supply and demand for natural lawn care products and services through professional and consumer education. The program was launched in Westchester County in 2004, and was expanded to include Long Island in 2006. Professional Education: Working in cooperation with local county governments and professional landscaper organizations, we have distributed more than 1000 copies of our DVD "Growing Your Business the Natural Way" and have trained more than 300 turf professionals in the science of natural lawn care. Our intensive two-day training programs focus on soil biology, natural amendments and revised horticultural practices. Most graduates are now offering natural lawn care services to their customers. For upcoming events, please check the program website. Consumer Outreach: Research shows that the mothers of young children are often the driving force in the decision to switch to natural lawn care, and our consumer outreach is focused on this demographic group. We have presented at hundreds of civic, community, school and religious group meetings, offering information about lawn pesticides and alerting consumers to the availability of natural lawn care services. Our consumer outreach is supported by radio advertising and transit billboards.
In recognition of this effective and innovative GHLP program, Grassroots received a 2006 Environmental Quality Award from the EPA and the Distinguished Public Health Service Award from the Westchester County Board of Health. The GHLP program is made possible in part by the generous support of the Long Island and Westchester Community Foundations.
