Fact Sheet

The ChildSafe School is an EPA award-winning program that provides a policy-based framework for reducing three toxic environmental exposures common to many schools:

Green Cleaning - Cleaning products used in many schools contain petroleum-based chemicals that can exacerbate asthmatic symptoms and cause other significant health problems. Safe, effective and economical bio-based "green" cleaning products are good alternatives. Watch the video.

Diesel exhaust contains many chemicals that can be harmful to children, and is known to cause lung cancer and asthma. The EPA says there is no safe level of exposure. "No-Idling" policies are a simple and effective solution. Watch the video.

Turf pesticides have been linked to both acute and long-term health problems, including neurological problems, endocrine disruption and certain cancers. Natural or organic turf management can be easily implemented for school grounds and playing fields.
