The ChildSafe School program was developed by Grassroots to help parents, teachers and school staff understand the links between environmental exposures that typically occur at schools and their potential health impacts, and to propose policy solutions to address these issues.

The program was first introduced in New York State in 2006. Since that time, New York has successfully addressed all three core issues of the program, passing legislation requiring the use of green cleaning products and prohibiting the use of pesticides on school grounds, and issuing a regulation prohibiting the idling of all motor vehicles on school grounds.

Grassroots has worked with state lawmakers, government agencies and local organizations throughout the Northeast to draft policies, develop legislation and organize campaigns to ensure successful outcomes. If we can assist with child-protective initiatives in your state, please call Policy Director Lauren Hughes at (516) 883-0887.
