Almost everyone recognizes the smell of new carpeting, but not everyone realizes that inhaling that smell could be hazardous. Chemicals used in the production and installation of commercial and residential carpeting can be toxic, and often continue to outgas into the air for weeks or even months after installation.
These outgasing chemicals are volatile organic compounds or "VOCs" which vaporize into the air. Some VOCs commonly found in carpets, carpet backing and adhesives include benzene, styrene, toluene, xylene, and formaldehyde.
The acute effects of exposure to these chemicals are fairly well known: headaches, nausea, eye and throat irritation. The chronic effects of exposure to these chemicals are less well known. They may include cancer, respiratory problems (including asthma), neurological problems, and birth defects. Children are particularly vulnerable to these potential effects, and women who are pregnant should avoid any exposure to newly installed carpeting.
High-quality carpeting made from organically-grown cotton and other renewable resources is available for both residential and light commercial applications.
